There are arguments both ways. This week you need to find an article supporting one viewpoint and post your reaction on this blog. I am starting the discussion with an article that appeared in The Economist. It says:
A new wave of technological progress may dramatically accelerate this automation of brain-work. Evidence is mounting that rapid technological progress, which accounted for the long era of rapid productivity growth from the 19th century to the 1970s, is back. The sort of advances that allow people to put in their pocket a computer that is not only more powerful than any in the world 20 years ago, but also has far better software and far greater access to useful data, as well as to other people and machines, have implications for all sorts of work.

In my honest viewpoint on having robotics in our employment line, I feel that they will neither increase or decrease the unemployment level. I'll tell you why. In order for the employment rate to decrease, robots will have to take over a ton of jobs in all different job types. To be honest, I do not feel that robots will be able to handle certain types of jobs and I feel are limited to manufacturing and low to high level assembly type work. On top of that, robotics is an expensive field where the investment to start having robots in your company will be tremendous. Not many companies can afford to be spending that type of money at this point. Robots will take up the jobs that are too advanced and too dangerous for humans and where the need for precision is a must. This will keep companies from going out of business because they will have free labor and have human workers at the front end of the company. Now, yes, that will mean humans will be replaced by robots for those types of jobs and can cause workers to become unemployed. But, where this levels out is ten years down the road when the need for the robots to complete certain jobs that will open up new types of jobs for human workers. It will handle itself the same way computers did and the same way the cell phone expanded. I feel robotics will turn the page in the employment book, creating new and innovative things while becoming the back-bone to a whole new chapter in our economy.
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, most electronics and robotics we not invented. People built things such as cars in factories by hand. This, in my opinion, is bizarre. First off, how precise and safe can these cars be? I know that these people were trained and knew what they were doing, but lets face it, people make mistakes. If someone is sitting in a dirty, hot factory for hours and they did not get enough sleep, they might forget a step or even get lazy and complete the job poorly. The idea of someone hand making something that big and heavy is dangerous and scary. The invention of robotics is something that we should all be thankful for.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, working in those factories caused very unsafe working environments and conditions for people. With the invention of machines, these people no longer have to put as much stress on their bodies and do not have to worry as much about hurting themselves. The machines allow for a much cleaner and safer environment, overall helping factory workers to live longer.
The use of machines and robotics has transformed our economy and society, making it much more efficient and quick. While most people are afraid that these robots are taking over and will soon eliminate all employment opportunities, Frank Tobe informs us that the creation of jobs by robotics will be 2.15 million to 3.5 million between the years 2012 and 2020. These jobs will be added in industries including consumer electronics, food, solar and wind power, and advanced battery manufacturing (IFR 2013). That is a lot of jobs created thanks to robotics. People need to understand that robots will never completely take over. Robots cannot do things that humans can. Robots cannot add personality to the tasks they complete; robots do not have feelings or emotion. How would a robot be a therapist? How would a robot be a doctor? All people are different. A robot will be programmed to do the exact same thing every time. Yes, there are jobs that will most likely be eliminated, but the loss of these jobs will eliminate unsafe work environments, increase productivity, improve quality, and will perform work that are not possible for humans to do. The growth of robotics will only have a positive effect on our economy.

ReplyDeleteAlthough robots may be destroying jobs, and after reading the above article from Business Insider, I have come to the conclusion that there are some bright sides to the rise in technology. Even though some jobs are being destroyed by automating many different things, for example burger making with robots, there are also many other jobs being created in order to maintain these machines. Not only is technology creating maintenance jobs for these machines it is also giving us other benefits that could help create jobs, or open up other already current jobs to other people. One example from the article that I read was that with technology advancing and video conferencing becoming better every day, students from all over the planet are able to get access to the best professors at the best universities via online classes. This could in the long run lead to a more educated workforce which could also in turn create more jobs as technology advances even further. So my take on this article is just that, although some of the jobs we are used to are being destroyed, the possibility to create newer jobs is an exciting opportunity. In other words, maybe the jobs we see as being destroyed are just becoming obsolete and the workforce needs to adapt in order to create new jobs for more people.
The article goes on to explain the shift in the early decades of the twentieth century. Most workers went from the agricultural sector into working within factories. The industrial revolution was very effective and the advance in society was vast. The writer of the article believes that is what is coming for us right now as technology is able to take over some of the easier tasks, and people will have to find other ways to focus on moving forward and creating new jobs that can advance human society forward. The author also states that in order to advance and accomplish this fete, we must revamp the educational system in the United States in order to educate people in order to accommodate these new jobs. I tend to agree with the author because I do see a shift is inevitable. For as long as people have been on earth we have continually advanced in terms of technology so it only makes sense that it keeps going on. I also agree that increasing education will help with the advance. So in the end, it makes sense that jobs are being destroyed by robots, but in the end it should create new jobs in new areas down the line.
Technology will happen and everything changes. Obviously there are good aspects, like online classes, although I like the face to face aspect of learning. I think this is a very practical attitude, there will be new opportunities with the new technologies for sure.
ReplyDeleteA Technology Review article claims that “We’re replacing jobs [with robots] that people don’t want to do and really shouldn’t be doing,” said Aldo Zini, whose company Aethon makes wheeled robots that ferry medicines, food trays, and garbage around hospital corridors so people don’t have to" (Simonite 2013). However, in my opinion, I don't believe that this is the best solution for these jobs. The people who deliver food and garbage around hospitals might rely on that job for their own personal finances, and now they're out of a job. How can this man speak on behalf of all people who perform those tasks in hospitals and say that they "don't want to be doing the job" - most people don't like their jobs, does that mean we should go replace every American worker who does not like their job? Absolutely not. Also, what happens if the robot malfunctions and garbage (such as needles, hazardous waste, blood, etc) is then exposed due to the malfunction? Technology is not always reliable. There are many problems that could go wrong due to the elimination of human interaction within the job. However, I suppose I do understand that if such garbage contains hazardous material, perhaps humans should not be the ones handling it, which would make the argument as to why robots should be doing that job instead of a person. "Human workers who do those jobs often develop repetitive-stress or back injuries and frequently quit," said Zini. The article also makes the argument that the robots will simply be used as tools for existing workers, and not necessarily replacements. It is believed that these robots are an "industrial augmentation to make workers more efficient" that will “find new jobs that come from that.” I do believe that the robots may make the job done more efficiently, but I don't necessarily believe that new jobs will come from the introduction of the robots.

Whether or not robots are added to the work force it is in my honest opinion that the current workplace would neither have an increase nor decrease however, if done then the likelihood of jobs decreasing as oppose to increasing seems far more plausible. If robots were put in to work jobs that humans “shouldn’t be doing” the job would still be getting completed. In addition, if the robots were placed into the work place then the “jobs” that were replaced by the robots are in a way simply being displaced. Yes the robots would take the job of the human but the humans would in turn be trained to service the robots, maintain them and that alone would create a new wave of employment. Nevertheless, if this was done I believe people would come to the realization that there are various jobs that can be replaced by robots. Many of the jobs are of lower prestige such as working in fast food places, or people who deliver things, sell clothes or stock shelves. With that being said I think the number of jobs that would be replaced by robots would in the end outnumber the number of jobs that they could potentially create such as maintenance or controlling the robot.
ReplyDeleteFurthermore, in order for the jobs to be created by the robot people would have to be trained themselves to work and take care of the robots. If that is in fact the case then imagine the entire staff of a clothing store hypothetically speaking we’ll put the staff members numbers at 11 if those 11 jobs were replaced by robots and only 3 were created for maintenance staff then in total 8 jobs were lost if this happened nationwide or globally then the numbers of jobs lost would still be far greater astronomical even. If robots would take control of the workplace then it seems that unemployment would increase far more than what it is right now which would be worst case scenario for our economy and living style in general. If robots were allowed to take the jobs of some humans I think it would be in the best interest to reserve it for certain jobs not all. We should not let the technology surpass us in numbers because if that were the case then as some point technology would get so advanced that people wouldn’t even be needed to complete any jobs. Lastly there are also jobs that are sensitive and deal with emotions that are natural to us and can’t be taught to machines. Therefore, with the restrictions of robots in a workplace then we can have somewhat of a balanced and controlled system.
Robotics is a field that will change the very essence of labor in the coming years. As of now, there is a lot of space for robotics to improve before factory line work can be completely mechanized. As such, factory lines now require a large supply of engineers to oversee the equipment and operation managers to oversee the development of the final product. Robotics takes away low income jobs from people, but it also gives them an incentive to expand their knowledge in order to become valuable in their industries. As computers become more readily available to everyone in the world, people become more intellectual about software and how to back up data. Robotics will in turn end up creating a lot more jobs than it will disenfranchise as big named companies like Microsoft will be able to sell more of their top tier machines to businesses. This allows more salespeople to enter the workforce and hence brings in telephone operators whose job it is to reach a person at their home.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I believe technology is increasing at a rate that no one understands and if has not happened already, the world will not understand how the technology works as a whole. We may understand bits and pieces, but I believe technology is growing faster than that of the human brains processing abilities.

DeleteI think robots will eliminate jobs. With robots replacing workers I believe it will save business owners a lot of money. It will cut down the labor force and help business owners gain more money. Business owners wouldn’t have to pay salaries to employees, taxes to the government, and insurance coverage. Robots will be more efficient because you are telling the robot what to do, and you limit the fewer mistakes done by humans. The positive thing about robots, with robots is that as speeds increase, it directly impacts production. Robots have the ability to work at a constant speed without stopping for breaks or calling time off, and it has the ability to produce more than a typical human worker. Apart from the high quality that comes with robots, they are also known for their efficiency and high quality. Robots have the capability to dramatically improve product quality. The functions performed by robots are with precision and can be replicated every time. This level of consistency can be hard to achieve any other way, and it will be a plus to business who are trying to produce products in mass production. A great example of robots being implemented is at Austin, Texas based coffee company, called Briggo. This company has automated the process of making a barista-brewed cup of coffee. Many positives have come through implementing this robotic process, like consumers getting 24/7 service to gourmet coffee drinks, which I believe attracts me the most I can have coffee available to me at anytime. As well as satisfying customers, it also satisfies Briggo as well, because they get a piece of the major of the $32 billion coffee market, as summed up by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. However, like there are many positives of using robots, there are also negatives. One major negative is the pricing of implementing robots. First you have to create a robot on how you want it to perform, and then comes replicating the robots, and finally once you get the robots working you have to maintain them, which is very costly. Apart from the pricing of the robots, you have to teach your employees or workers on how to work with the robots, which is timing consuming and also waste money. In conclusion, I believe that robots will benefit the workforce heavily and will eliminate the hazardous labor that people go through, but like I mentioned earlier it will be costly.

ReplyDeleteRobots in the workplace is an interesting topic because it’s a relatively new concept. With new concepts comes the misconception that it will have a negative outcome on the economy. However, as a nation we’ve seen what happens when older jobs become obsolete and that is more jobs are created from a different method or as a result of said advancement. As what happened during the industrial revolution, certain industries flourished while others saw a decrease in performance and job output.
ReplyDeleteWith this in mind it’s clear that robots are simply another stepping stone in the modern economy and the place of the average worker. While the jobs may appear in a different industry that may not be entirely bad for the United States. Already throughout the globe there are competing nations racing to the bottom with regards to wages which is why it’s difficult to get manufacturing back in the United States. However, as pointed out by Jeff Burnstein on Bloomberg Businessweek this can be helped by robotics: “What should really give workers pause is when their companies won't use robots and other automated technologies to become stronger global competitors. U.S. technology and business innovators recognize that robots in factories have the potential to save and create more jobs than they eliminate.” It is best for United States companies to stay competitive any way possible as those jobs will be eliminated regardless if they aren’t. If the company is therefore behind on technology and can not keep up there will be more jobs lost than there would’ve been if the low-level manufacturing jobs were replaced by said robotics.
The key to robotics also is that humans can work in co-operation with them when actual direct input is needed. While this may seem like it is providing fewer jobs, as I previously mentioned those jobs likely would’ve been lost had the entire manufacturing line had stagnant development. Manufacturing is an issue for the United States as it’s attempting to balance and compete with other nations that are willing to pay less than we are. Robotics in the United States will lead to more products being produced here as opposed to overseas.

In my own personal opinion I believe robots will eventually be manufacturing all the products we need to make in the United States. This will lead to less outsourcing by companies because we will no longer have to pay workers in China instead robots do not need a paycheck. However, I don't think the addition of robots will lead to unemployment increases in our country. If you look back in time when new inventions were created such as the cotton gin, sewing machine, or automobile, more jobs were created as a result. These inventions opened up new opportunities to workers that they didn't have before. This article talks about how robots can offer high quality products at lower costs then countries like China and India. The people losing jobs to robots can now be placed in newer more skilled and higher paying jobs then before. If anything the addition to robots to jobs will increase jobs for people designing the robots. There is a large ecosystem of robotic-related jobs that could employ thousands of people who design, build, program, and service robots and the equipment they work with. In order to get products that are of desired quality and productivity robots are necessary. Unlike you and I, robots are not human they will not make a mistake unless they are program incorrectly. I believe this is where our society is headed and it is important to make sure it doesn't lead to higher unemployment then we already have. Look at Michigan who currently has a 14% or higher unemployment rate. The introduction of robots would only add to this number but if you think about it robots could open up different jobs for these citizens of Michigan. On top of that the robots not requiring wages will help the company grow and become a stronger global competitor.

I think that re-education is really important for people to earn those better jobs. That area on the great lakes, was an innovator in manufacturing practices and that really created jobs in the 20th century, but any innovation is a moving target and needs refinement, progress and change to meet the challenges of the future.

In my opinion, the outcome will likely be very positive for some yet devastating to others. The creation of new technologies will create jobs for those with select areas of expertise such as building and maintenance of robotic equipment. These people will have endless opportunities to create and improve more technologies and become successful in their fields.
ReplyDeleteThough a technology boom has its perks, I see the negatives outweighing the positive outcomes. Yes, some people will see huge benefits from the technological movement, but most will struggle and find their professions becoming irrelevant as a result. A Forbes article shed some light on this part of the problem, describing how “in the past, innovation advanced slowly enough that people had time to recognize and adapt to new opportunities before many of the old jobs disappeared. Today, innovation is advancing so quickly that jobs are being destroyed and new opportunities are being created faster than many people can recognize them or adapt to them.” This technology movement will leave people without jobs before they even know what hit them. In addition, the jobs created by new technologies will be in completely different fields than those eliminated. For instance, say there are huge advances in the technology of the medical field, eliminating the need for heart surgeons. This would leave those with specialties in heart surgery with the decision to either get a second education in a different specialty (which could also become irrelevant by the time they are finished), or accept unemployment. In the end, some may say that the extinction of jobs is the price we have to pay for technological modernization, but are these advances really worth it?
Not only are new technologies taking over the job market, they are also taking over our way of life by eliminating tasks previously practiced by humans. For a time, it may seem like these advances are a natural progression in life, increasing efficiency and decreasing cost of labor, but I find that I am wary about the way it will effect our quality of life as a whole. Will it change our work ethic to so that we become lazy because so many things can be done for us by machines? What about children? I already see a change in the way kids spend their free time. When I was young, there were not as many things like the iPad for example to keep us entertained, so we played outside and used our imaginations to make up games for ourselves, but with all the new technologies gaining popularity, I wonder if a childhood like mine and all the great things that came with it will become a thing of the past. These are things we must keep in mind when considering the effect of robotic advancement in our world today.

On Biotechnology
ReplyDeleteI adore technology. I view steel and carbon fiber and circuitry and software as the magna opus of human invention. I fully embrace it, though I must admit it may simply be the generation I was born into. When examining the pros and cons of technology, I feel there are very many more benefits to them. My particular focus here will be on the biotechnological revolution and nanotechnology.
I think that the greatest limitation on humanity is the human body. The human form is an incredible feat of evolutionary engineering on behalf of Mother Nature. But it is still flawed. We grow sick and broken, and should this not be enough to end us, the cold embrace of old age is only too welcoming. Biotechnology seems to be the answer.
NanoBiotechnology is one of the subgroups in this field, and is based off the idea of microscope machines being used to heal and restore. These tiny injectable machines have the ability to be programmed as artificial lymphocytes specifically targeting and eliminating foreign disease causing entities or damaged cells in the human body. Consider this effect on cancer of HIV.
There is 6’ of DNA in a single cellular nucleus made of trillions of nucleotides. Errors are bound to happen. And when these errors occur, the overall quality of the new cells is lower. These errors add up to eventually there is an organism-wide deficit. This process is known as “aging”. These nanomachines may even be able to scaled to an even smaller stage someday, and be used to literally stop the aging process. We may stand on the cusp of transcending mortality itself.
My only regret is I was born too early to see what human ingenuity can truly create.

I think that over the next fifty or so years more and more people’s jobs will be taken over by robots. Now there are two sides to this argument; the first one being against robots taking our jobs. Most people are going to be on this side of the argument because they are upset that they wont have a way to obtain an income while some robot out there is doing their old job. If you think about it this way it does seem like a bad thing because there are so many people on this planet it already seems like there aren’t enough jobs for everyone and that is without robots taking over some jobs. After reading an article I found another argument why it is a good thing that robots are taking over our jobs. It seems a little farfetched to me, but here is what the article said. The author was in favor of robots taking our jobs because most jobs that a robot will take over from us will do that job better than a human. I sort of agree with this because I suppose a robot can do most jobs better than a human can. Then you can say if all of our jobs are taken over by robots how will anyone make money to live. The author countered this point by saying that if all the jobs are done by robots people wont need to make money; they will live in a society without having to buy food, clothes, shelter, or other objects. I think this guy is living in a fantasy world because I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Now there is two looks at what will happen once robots start taking our jobs and I think that in some areas it is a good thing and in some other areas it isn’t a good thing. It depends on the job they give a robot because there are some jobs that should be kept by humans and others I can see why they would want a robot to do it.

We are currently living within a world where more and more computers are doing most of the jobs humans use to do. The way I feel about this is that it could potentially be a good thing. We are fortunate as a society to have come so far in regards to technology that it drastically effects the way in which we live each and every day. Having computers in the work place effects all forms of work and everyone who is employed. Advocates of technology and computers argue that 200 years ago, most Americans were farmers, producing just enough to feed the population. Today, with advanced automation, about 2 percent of Americans are employed in full-time agricultural work, yet they produce much more food than we can consume. However, critics of the automation boom claim that such technological advancements are killing off middle-class jobs. Robots and automated systems have not only eliminated elevator operators and highway toll collectors, but are also making inroads into higher-skilled job functions, and the long-term effect in job losses among human workers may be much more severe than most expect. Some people have even gone as far as saying it makes their particular workplace more competitive. Even small businesses in today’s time are focusing more and relying more on technology rather then employees. There’s no question that robots or computers have taken away many of jobs within the work place, but they also could bring certain jobs to the work place as well. For every robot or computer that’s within a work place there has to be a specialized and skilled worker that can operate that particular robot or computer. I am although, strongly concerned for the millions of workers that work industrial jobs. I believe these jobs are the type of jobs that wil see the most change within the years to come simply because robots can do the job more quickly and efficiently. As long as you are truly skilled in something, there will always be work for you that’s how I see. So embrace the robots and just work harder.
ReplyDeleteThe concept of a robotic workforce is a tricky one to grasp. There exists both pros and cons of utilizing robots in our workforce. Positively, robots can do repetitive and monotonous tasks at a much faster pace and with more accuracy than a human ever could. Robots could eliminate all manufacturing jobs and create products that are more uniform and safe. The use of robots will also greatly reduce the amount of workplace accidents. A more abstract advantage to a robotic workforce is that it will allow humans to focus more on concepts and logistics rather than manual labor. A person that might have previously been raised to work a manual labor job at a factory can now focus on running their own business and making further progress in technology, health, science etc... However, because there are currently 7 billion people on Planet Earth that are all willing candidates for work, the amount of jobs would greatly be reduced causing unemployment levels to reach dangerous heights. The idea of a robotic workforce would be a great benefit if the human population was far less. This would allow people to reach their full intellectual potentials rather than have to focus on the actual production of goods and products.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic for debate as we have seen over the last twenty years just how fast technology can advance. Do I think that robots will create or eliminate jobs; I personally do not think that robots will have any significant impact in the work place. There are many jobs that require an actual human being rather than a robot to do the job. In the article it talks about how robots have been used in factories to replace humans. As a result, this one company was able to produce more products per hour than that of a team of human beings producing the product. Another example in this article that discusses how robots have eliminated jobs is on our highways in America. Tolls on our highways now have EZ pass which eliminates jobs and now a computer scans a barcode when the car drives through a toll rather than a human standing there and collecting the toll fee. As these are two examples how robots have eliminated jobs for some individuals, I do not see robots having a major role in the elimination of jobs. There are just way too many jobs in the world today and if robots were to take over these jobs then some one is going to have to start producing a lot of robots in order for people to have their jobs eliminated from them. Also it does not make much sense, why would we want robots taking over and eliminating jobs. Today, there is already a major problem with employment and it is already hard enough to find a job. Why then would anybody want robots in the work force. Yes, robots obviously have the ability to manufacture and produce more inventories but at the same time this can leave many people jobless and then in return create a bigger problem in that people will struggle to have a proper income. I think that the use of robots could be a good idea, but I think that there should be a limit to what extent they are used because we do not want robots to rule to the world one day and we certainly do not want them to take over jobs as this would leave many people scratching their heads trying to figure out how to compete with a robot for a specific job.

After seeing the excerpt from the blog, I decided to use that article for my blog post because of the immediate disagreement I took. I also disagree with the stance taken by the blog about robots increasing jobs and wages. I believe that the increase in robots will replace the workforce. However, I do not believe that everyone is at risk. Certain jobs require certain skills, and these skills can differ depending on the job. A barber for example, using a straight edge knife to cut a beard, will not be trusted if a robot were to replace the barber and use the dangerous object.
ReplyDeleteAlso, places like Amazon have already begun to use robots to carry out their tasks. In giant warehouse, robots are being used to travel around the facility, pick up the products, and send them to the shipping center (US News). Due to the efficiency of the robots, many people have lost their previous jobs. Also, consider how Amazon is already trying out the drone delivery system. If these eventually get perfected, delivery by UPS will be nonexistent, and so will the employees.
To clarify, I do not believe all citizens are at risk. I think the low income, low skill set jobs are at the most risk, with the high income, high mathematical jobs just under them. Take a finance position that focuses on calculating certain reports; these jobs can eventually be replaced with a robot that understands the concepts of the market. Just because it is not smart enough yet, does not mean it cannot be in five years. The world is slowing turning into a technological society, and the implication of robots will slowly lower the employment rate.

A very current topic today is: Will robots create or eliminate jobs? After reading through articles so I could exercise all possibilities, I came across one that brought up many great points. It is clear that new technology does eliminate jobs. For example, look at the cotton gin. This eliminated the need for many field workers, resulting them in a loss of their job. But when new technologies are introduced, so are job opportunities. The only issue here is that around the time the cotton gin was invented, technology moved much slower. All the new opportunities created by the cotton gin, were easily spotted and taken. With the advances of technology today, it is becoming harder and harder to pinpoint new opportunities because they are coming and going very fast. We need to recognize the new needs created by satisfying old ones. We need to realize that new solutions have needs, new solution providers have needs, and new solutions create new needs around them. We need to always keep up with the new technologies by mastering the new ones that are taking up jobs, keeping current with the growing technologies in your field, and choose a career that's in high demand.
